Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement marking two years since Russia invaded Ukraine. When Vladimir Putin launched the invasion, he thought the world wouldn’t react and Ukraine would quickly surrender. However, Ukraine has bravely defended itself, and its flag still flies over its capital, Kyiv. Putin’s invasion not only violates Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence but also challenges the fundamental principles of the rules-based international order. It is an affront to our shared humanity, an attack on freedom, democracy, and peace.
Trudeau highlighted that despite Russia’s ongoing attacks, Ukraine continues to show courage, fighting not just for its land but for the values of freedom and democracy that matter to the whole world. He emphasized Canada’s strong support for Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, providing significant aid, including military assistance, training, and financial support for reconstruction. Our commitment exceeds $9.7 billion, including $2.4 billion in military assistance, comprising Howitzers, Leopard 2 tanks, ammunition, thermal clothing, body armor, and fuel. Under Operation UNIFIER, we have trained over 40,000 Ukrainian troops. Through substantial loans and humanitarian and development aid, we are aiding Ukraine in its reconstruction and recovery.
The Prime Minister mentioned the sanctions imposed on Russia and its supporters, with additional measures announced. He stressed the importance of not abandoning Ukraine, considering the deep historical and cultural ties between Canada and Ukraine. Trudeau warned about the global consequences if Russia’s aggression goes unchecked and expressed Canada’s commitment to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes in its fight for freedom and democracy.
He ended the statement with “Slava Ukraini,” meaning “Glory to Ukraine.”
