A video showing hundreds of Indian students lined up for waiter and dishwasher jobs at a restaurant in Brampton, Canada, has gone viral. The situation raises concerns about the rising unemployment rate in Canada under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration and highlights the dire employment situation for international students.
The Tandoori Flame restaurant in Brampton reportedly received about 3,000 applicants — mostly Indian students — in just two days for waiter and cleaning positions, Indeep Kaur, the restaurant’s executive manager told the media.
While the video doing the rounds on social media has not been verified independently, it has nevertheless sparked discussions about the reality of life for Indian students heading to Canada with dollar dreams.
In response to the growing number of international students, the Canadian government has recently reduced international student visa issuance by 35%, with plans for an additional 10% reduction next year. The Trudeau government aims to issue 4,37,000 study permits in 2025, down from the 4,85,000 expected in 2024.
