In the Melbourne Test, Australia triumphed over India to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. However, amidst the defeat, Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah achieved a significant milestone. He took a five-wicket haul in the second innings, surpassing 200 Test wickets, becoming the 12th Indian bowler to do so. Bumrah also set a unique record as the only bowler in Test history with a minimum of 200 wickets and an average of under 20.
Close to Bumrah in the records are West Indies legends Malcolm Marshall (20.94), Joel Garner (20.97), and Curtly Ambrose (20.99). Among active cricketers, Kagiso Rabada (321 wickets at 21.88) and Pat Cummins (286 wickets at 22.68) are next in line. Bumrah’s impressive form has been a key factor for India, as he claimed 71 wickets from 13 Tests in 2024—his best-ever tally for a year.
The 31-year-old right-arm pacer, who led India to a commanding victory in Perth, has now taken 29 wickets in the ongoing series in Australia, as both teams vie for a spot in next year’s ICC World Test Championship Final.
